Mentoring in OneTerp
Pair up with a mentor or a mentee: practice clips, feedback pinned to the exact moment in a video, write-ups of observed work, and a confirmed log of mentoring hours.
OneTerp Mentoring is a shared space for two interpreters. The mentor sends practices (instructions, a YouTube clip to interpret, anything worth reading), the mentee records their work, uploads it to YouTube as Unlisted and pastes the link, and the mentor leaves comments pinned to moments in that video. Mentors can also write up a job they watched, and both of you keep a log of mentoring time that the other person confirms. Mentoring needs OneTerp Premium on at least one side of the pair, whichever side, so a mentor can bring it for a mentee who is just starting out.
Step by step
- 1Open Home and choose the "Mentoring" tab.
- 2Click "Invite a mentor" if you want someone to mentor you, or "Invite someone to mentor" if you are offering. Copy the link and send it to them however you normally would.
- 3The other person opens the link, signs in or creates a free account, and clicks "Accept invite". You are connected, and you both get a notice.
- 4The mentor opens the mentorship and clicks "+ New practice": a title, instructions, an optional YouTube source clip, links, a due date, and anything from the OneTerp library.
- 5The mentee records their work, uploads it to YouTube as Unlisted, and pastes the link under "Hand in your work".
- 6The mentor plays the video, pauses where something happened, clicks "Comment at this moment", picks a skill if it fits, and writes the comment. Clicking a comment's time jumps the video back to it.
- 7When they are done, the mentor either marks the practice complete or sends it back with a note saying what to try next.
- 8Either of you can log time on the Hours tab. The other person confirms it, and confirmed hours export as a PDF or CSV.
Tips
- Upload as Unlisted, not Private. Unlisted means only people with the link can watch; Private blocks your mentor too.
- Invite links work once and last two weeks. If one expires, just make another.
- Only one of you needs Premium. If neither of you has it, everything already there stays readable, and editing comes back as soon as either of you starts Premium or a Launch Year.
- 🔴 Observation write-ups are about the interpreting only. Never name the patient, client or anyone else there, and leave out medical, legal or personal details. Describe the setting in general terms, like "medical, specialist follow-up".
- Skill tags on comments are what drive the "Suggested" resources and the skills your feedback keeps coming back to, so tag when a comment is clearly about one skill.
- The hours log is documentation for your own independent-study filing. OneTerp is not a CEU sponsor and does not award credit, so check what your certifying body accepts.
- Either of you can end a mentorship. The mentee keeps everything. The mentor loses access to the work straight away but keeps the hours log.
- Looking for a mentor? Your interpreter education program and your state association are the best places to start. OneTerp does not match mentors, so you invite someone you know.
- Turn mentoring emails or app notifications off under Profile, in the notification settings, on the Mentoring row.
