Nobody Learns This Job Alone: Introducing Mentoring and OneTerp Launch

Bryan GrubbOctober 8, 2026

Somebody taught you this job.

Maybe it was an ITP instructor who stayed after class. Maybe it was a team interpreter who leaned over on a break and said, kindly, "You dropped the whole second half of that." Maybe it was a coordinator who put you on the right job at the right time and checked on you afterward.

Ask any working interpreter who taught them, and they will have a name ready. Usually more than one.

Nobody learns this job alone. Nobody should have to.

This fall we added two things to OneTerp that are built on that idea. One is for the people doing the teaching. One is for the people just starting out. And they work best together.

Why a scheduling company cares about mentoring

That is a fair question. OneTerp started as scheduling, dispatch, and invoicing. So here is what we actually believe, because it explains everything else.

  1. Interpreters are professionals. Professionals deserve professional tools, not a paper calendar and a glove box full of receipts.
  2. Agencies are the touch point. They sit between interpreters and the people who rely on us, and they deserve tools that make that job easier, not harder.
  3. The profession only gets better when we help newer interpreters get better. That third one is not a slogan. Every new interpreter who gives up in year two is one fewer interpreter for the next Deaf patient waiting in an exam room. The skill gap between graduation and real confidence gets closed by people, one debrief at a time.

Software cannot mentor anyone. What it can do is get out of the way and keep the record.

Mentoring: one place for the work between you

Here is how most mentoring works right now. A video link in a text thread. Notes in a notebook. "Somewhere around two minutes in." Hours written on a napkin that nobody can find in April.

That is not a criticism. Everybody mentors that way because nothing better existed. I have done it that way too.

OneTerp Mentoring is one shared space for a mentor and a mentee. Here is how it works.

  1. Invite someone you already know. OneTerp does not match you with a stranger. You bring the person you trust.
  2. The mentor sends a Practice. A title, instructions, an optional YouTube source clip, and a due date.
  3. The mentee records and hands it in. Upload your work to YouTube as Unlisted, paste the link, and it is turned in.
  4. Feedback lands on the exact second. The mentor pins a comment to the moment it matters and can tag the skill it is about. Click the time on any comment and the video jumps right there.
  5. Hours get confirmed, not guessed. Either person logs time on the Hours tab, and the other person confirms it. Confirmed hours export as a PDF or CSV for your own records.

No more "somewhere around two minutes in." No more hours on a napkin.

A quick honest note on those hours. OneTerp is not a CEU sponsor and does not award credit. The hours log is clean documentation you can use for your own independent study paperwork. Check what your certifying body accepts.

And it stays between the two of you. Your agency does not see your practices, your feedback, or your hours.

Only one of you needs Premium

Mentoring is part of OneTerp Premium. But only one side of the pair needs Premium. The other person can be on the free plan.

So an experienced interpreter with Premium can bring in a brand new interpreter on day one, at no cost to them.

Now flip it around. What if the new interpreter is the one who has Premium?

That is where the second announcement comes in.

OneTerp Launch: a free year for new interpreters

OneTerp_Launch_Banner_Light

OneTerp Launch gives interpreting students who are heading into internship or graduation a full year of OneTerp Premium, free. Premium is normally $15 a month.

That year covers the things nobody teaches you in school. Invoices for your direct clients. Mileage and expense tracking. A Schedule C summary for your first tax season. A professional portfolio page that belongs to you. And now, Mentoring.

Here is how it works.

  • Your program gets a code. We issue each interpreter training program its own code. The director shares it however they already reach students: a slide, a class post, or just saying it out loud on the last day.
  • You redeem it yourself at oneterpsched.com/launch. Create your free account, enter the code, and your year of Premium starts that moment.
  • The clock starts when you redeem. A code shared in May is still a full twelve months for someone who redeems it in August.
  • Nothing auto charges. When your year ends, you decide what happens next. You can cancel anytime. Each code has a set number of places and an end date, so if you hear about one, do not sit on it.

Why these two belong together

A Launch Year counts as the Premium side of a mentoring pair.

Read that one more time. A brand new graduate can invite their mentor, and the mentor pays nothing.

Usually the newest person in the room is the one asking for help and hoping not to be a burden. This time they walk in holding the keys. "I have a free year of OneTerp. Would you mentor me? It will not cost you a thing, and I will hand in my work right where you can see it."

That is a much easier ask to say yes to.

What to do next

If you are a student or a new grad: ask your program director whether they have a OneTerp Launch code. Then think of the one interpreter whose feedback you would trust most, and invite them.

If you are an experienced interpreter: think of one person. The new grad who reminds you of you. Start your free month of Premium at oneterpsched.com, invite them, and send your first Practice.

If you run an interpreter training program: email me at bryan@oneterpscheduling.com and I will set up a code for your students. There is nothing to sign and nothing to promote. If you want it, I will also come teach a free class on the business side of interpreting. That part is optional.

Someone showed you how to do this work.

Now it is your turn.

Frequently asked questions

What is OneTerp Mentoring?
OneTerp Mentoring is a shared space for an interpreter mentor and mentee. The mentor sends practices, the mentee hands in video work, feedback is pinned to the exact second of the video, and both people log and confirm mentoring hours.
Do both the mentor and the mentee need OneTerp Premium?
No. Only one person in the pair needs Premium, and the other can use the free plan. A OneTerp Launch free year counts as the Premium side.
Can OneTerp find me a mentor?
No. OneTerp does not match mentors. You invite someone you already know and trust, and your ITP instructors or local interpreter association are good places to look.
Do mentoring hours in OneTerp count as CEUs?
OneTerp is not a CEU sponsor and does not award credit. Confirmed hours export as a PDF or CSV you can use as documentation for your own independent study filing, so check what your certifying body accepts.
How do interpreting students get a free year of OneTerp Premium?
Through OneTerp Launch, interpreter training programs receive a code to share with students heading into internship or graduation. Each student redeems it at oneterpsched.com/launch, and the free year starts the day they redeem.
Is my practice video private?
You upload your work to YouTube as Unlisted, which means only people with the link can watch it. Your practices, feedback, and hours stay between you and your mentor, and your agency does not see them.
